Pedigree Analysis of 2010 National Show Winners


The Holstein Association USA web site now has a new section that is a must for the show buff.  "Pedigree Analysis of National Holstein Show Winners" is a section contains various lists that provide a closer look at the genetics behind these show winners. You can view these lists at, www.holsteinusa.com and scroll to the Popular Lists section towards the bottom of the homepage.

Holstein females used in the compilation of the data were those that placed in the top three in their respective age class at the 11 National Holstein Shows held in 2010. If an animal placed in the top three at multiple National Shows, she is counted once for each show. This year, the count included 217 heifers and 279 cows.

The lists will be updated annually, following the last National Holstein Show of the year. National Junior Show results are not included.
The three main areas featured: Leading Sires, Leading Maternal Grandsires, and Most Common Sire Stacks. Each area features separate lists for heifers and cows, along with an overall ranking of bulls for the category. In addition to the lists, there is other statically information that may be of interest. For example the 479 animals that placed in the top three places at the National Shows they were sired by 135 different sires.

2010 Results

Leading Sire of National Holstein Show Winners
It is no surprise that Braedale Goldwyn is the 2010 Overall Leading Sire of National Holstein Show Winners, with a total of 68 daughters placing in the top three. He is the Leading Sire of Show Winning Cows, and runner-up in the Leading Sires of Heifers category. Topping the Leading Sires of Heifers is Wilcoxview Jasper with 30 daughters.

Leading Maternal Grandsire of National Holstein Show Winners
Regancrest Elton Durham-ET is the 2010 Overall Leading Maternal Grandsire of National Holstein Show Winners, found on the bottom side of the pedigree of 53 females that placed in the top three in their classes. He ranks number one in both the Heifer and Cow categories of the Leading Maternal Grandsires lists. His maternal brother Regancrest Dundee ranks #2 on Overall Leading Maternal Grandsire list with 24 granddaughters making the cut. Talk about a breeding program having an impact.

Sire Stack
The Most Common Sire Stack of the 2010 National Holstein Show Winners combines two perennial show bulls- Goldwyn x Durham with 12 females from this combination.
