New Genomic Testing Available

Holstein Canada and Semex partners (CIAQ, Eastern Breeders, Gencor, and Westgen) have joined together in order to offer genomic testing of females for all dairy producers. The program, GenoTest, gives breeders the option of using either the 3K or 50K SNP test. With GenoTest, they also have the option to submit DNA samples via the traditional hair sample or nasal swabs.

GenoTest gives breeders the option of using the 50K panel or the newly available 3K panel. The 50K test has become more affordable by significantly reducing the cost to $160/test for Canadian registered animals and provides a higher level of accuracy and reliability. The 3K cost is $47/animal, yielding around 80% to 90% of the accuracy of the 50K test.

GenoTest provides increased reliability and accuracy of genetic evaluations. It also gives breeders the ability to select the animals to test at even an earlier age, in order to help achieve faster genetic progress. This program can act as a tool to optimize the mating of heifers and help breeders make better marketing and management decisions.
